The History of DGMS (Don Guanella Major Seminary) in Chennai begins with a group of brothers beginning their studies in Sacred Heart Seminary with having their residence in the same seminary. Then the official inauguration of the DGMS took place in the residence of James Street on 16th June 1998. The foundation stone for the new seminary in Karaiyan Chavadi was blessed by the Archbishop of Madras- Mylapore, Most Rev. Aruldass James, and laid by Rev. Fr. Saginario, Secretary General and Rev. Fr. Piero Lippoli, Vice-Provincial. The present site of DGMS was inaugurated for both philosophers and theologians on 25th October 1999. Rev. Fr. Nico Rutigliano was the first Superior and Rector of DGMS.
From the academic year 2005-06, the philosophical course was shifted to Guanella Preethi Nivas (GPN), Bangalore. Up until this time, DGMS has given to the Congregation and to the church 55 priests with 29 students completing their theological studies as they approach their days of Ordination.
